Group D gives us a rather unusual derby for 1st place. We would be expecting some gigantic teams facing each other when we hear the word “derby”, but this time around we’re looking at two teams which have been impressive in recent years: Austria and Wales, both with 3 points after Day 1. Who will come on top after the clash in Vienna?
Austria vs Wales – 6th October
Betting Odds: Austria 2.37 or 11/8 Draw 3.20 or 11/5 Wales 3.40 or 12/5
The home team will want to put their abysmal performance in Euro 2016 behind them as soon as possible. Failing to qualify from a group which featured Hungary, Portugal and Iceland (which have all qualified) was seen as a huge disappointment, but direct qualification for the World Cup would surely erase this memory.
The Austrians debuted this campaign with an away win in Georgia and haven’t lost at home in quite some time. Surely, they won’t want to ruin this record against Wales.
Meanwhile, the British team beat Moldova 4-0 on Day 1 and will be looking for more points, as they’re eyeing direct qualification for the World Cup for the first time in many, many years.
They are relying on the great quality of some of their players (Allen, Bale, etc.) and their great counter-attacking skills to win at least a point from the game against Austria.
History tells us they can be hopeful – they have beaten the Austrians a couple of times in recent past, although never away from Wales.
Austria vs Wales Betting Tips
From a betting perspective, this is one of the clearest over 2,5 bets we see for the day. We do think that Austria will not lose the game, so 1X could be a decent alternative, although it might not have the greatest odds available.
Also, you might be inclined to look for a bet on yellow cards, because both teams play a rather physical game – we expect at least 3 or 4 yellow cards.
Both Teams To Score – Yes: 2.00 or 1/1
Goals – Over 2.5: 2.35 or 27/20
