If you think Chelsea – Manchester United is not the most interesting game to watch this weekend, you must be Italian – where you can also watch a classic derby between Milan and Juventus.
Will we see a spectacular game, with lots of goals and drama? Highly unlikely, given the contenders and their playing philosophy – but the match should be interesting regardless.
Chelsea vs Manchester United – 23/10/2016
Betting Odds: Chelsea 2.25 or 5/4 Draw 3.30 or 23/10 Man United 3.60 or 13/5
The main talking point will be Jose’s return to the team where he won numerous titles. After being sacked last season by Abramovic due to Chelsea being closer to relegation than retaining the title, the Portuguese super-coach signed for Manchester United, aiming to bring them back to the top where they deserve.
Chelsea didn’t waste any time either, and brought Antonio Conte to lead the team – but the Italian coach is finding the adaptation to English football harder than initially expected. The two men share a view that football is not about possession, but results.
History between the two clubs is obviously impressive, but we have managed to look at two very distinct trends in recent (post-2000) games. While the Red Devils were used to beating Chelsea when Ferguson was in charge, this changed with 180 degrees after the legendary coach left the team. Since 2011, United have a single win against Chelsea, a feat which is quickly turning into a curse.
It’s hard to say if they are capable of winning this time around or not. They have some of the best individual quality in the world right now, and probably the best they’ve had in quite a while. Pogba, Rooney, Mata, Ibrahimovic, Martial, Lingard, Rashford – these are all players which can produce a goal in any minute, with long-range strikes, fine headers or by dribbling 3 defenders and scoring.
If they manage to create chances, the quality of their finishing will not let them down, and they should be able to put a goal or two behind Curtois, just like they did in their 4-1 win in midweek against Fenerbahce.
Thankfully, they also have an almost clean bill of health, except for Phil Jones (who is almost never fit, anyway) and Schneiderlin, who probably wasn’t going to play. Mourinho is left to pick the squad he thinks is best against Chelsea, and hope that Ibrahimovic will score – he hasn’t done this in a while.
On the other hand, Chelsea has recovered after their losses against Liverpool and Arsenal with two wins and some overall good performances. It’s certainly worrying for Conte that the team isn’t able to produce their best performance in games against big teams, and a defeat against United will put a big dent in their top-4 challenge.
They too have an almost clean bill of health and have two players in great form: Costa and Hazard, which the latter thoroughly enjoying his last outings against United. Home ground advantage has also proven to be of great importance for Chelsea in their last title-winning campaigns, so we expect their fans to lead the team to victory.
Chelsea vs Manchester United Betting Tips
Betting on derbies is always hard if you’re looking for a clear winner. If not, there are a few ideas we’d like to propose. First off, we’ve seen Liverpool’s game against United last weekend, that ended 0-0, and think this one will follow the same steps.
An under 2,5 goal bet is a great idea, or a 1-3 goal interval if you have the opportunity. Also, we expect to see cards, since we’re looking at players like Ibra, Pogba, Bailly, Costa, Matic or Cahill on the field – all known to concede quite a few yellows. Good luck!
