The wait is over, the teams are known, the final is upon us – we return to the Stade de France, where we kicked off this footballing celebration exactly one month ago, on June 10th. One of the teams that featured in that game, France, made it all the way to the final.
They practically returned to the place they started their adventure, in front of the same fans, but with two major differences: tonight, they are fighting for the title, and against different opposition: they no longer face Romania, but Ronaldo’s trophy-hungry Portugal.
Betting Odds: Portugal 4.50 or 7/2 Draw 3.20 or 11/5 France 2.05 or 21/20
Portugal are the surprise presence in this year’s final. Not necessarily because of the power of their name, but because the less-than-ideal football they’ve played in the tournament. After 3 draws in the group stage, they went on to beat Croatia in extra time in the round of 16, Poland on penalties in the quarter-finals and Wales in the semi-finals.
They didn’t face first-class oppositions so far, which might be considered a drawback. On the other hand, their game has become better game after game. They actually produced good, attacking football in the semi-finals, especially from star players Ronaldo and Nani. Will they be able to impress in the final?
On the other hand, France played some of the most complete and good football in this year’s tournament. After winning their group with ease, they moved on to beat Ireland 2-1 in the round of 16, send the surprising Iceland home after a 5-2 quarter final win and beat reigning World Champions Germany 2-0 in the semi-final.
They team plays nice, direct, attacking football, while also remaining responsible at the back. The French feature several of this tournament’s best goalscorers: Griezmann (6 goals), Giroud and Payet. Backed up by the awesome Paul Pogba from deeper midfield, the French attacking trio will surely be hard for Portugal to stop.
Thankfully, due to the nature of the two teams, there are lots of good betting ideas for this final. The favorites to take home the title are France, and they actually have good odds of doing so. The other fairly smart bets are over 1,5 goals, and from a goalscoring perspective, Griezmann and Ronaldo are favorites from each side. Giroud and Payet are also crowd favorites to score – pick your favorite and put some money on him.
France to win and over 1,5 goals is another good idea, and if you can pick more than 2 events, add Griezmann as goalscorer to the list. It’s hard to predict which team will have more possession or yellow cards in this game – because it all depends on who will attack more, which will depend on who scores first and when they do so.
This game concludes our footballing adventure in the summer of 2016 – it would be very nice to end it on a positive note and win some money. Our record in the tournament has been good so far, and we are confident we aren’t going to ruin it in the Grand final. Fingers crossed for the French!
