International Champions Cup 2016: Betting Preview, Odds & Tips
When you hear about a Manchester Derby, a City vs. United game, you’re not a true football fan if you don’t shiver. The game has years and years of history, great battles taking place everywhere, from mid-table standings to top-flight football.
In recent years, the teams even battled for the Premier League title. Although United have been less-than-impressive in the last few years, they are poised to strike back fast, swift and deadly. And this Manchester Derby has more interesting facts to it!
25 July – Beijing, China
It’s the first time in history that these two teams meet outside of England. They have chosen the ICC to stage this clash, which is a friendly competition, but surely won’t be treated like one.
Apart from the intense rivalry between the players, some of them with many, many derbies already passed, we have a new rivalry which is just beginning to unfold in England: the classic Jose Mourinho vs. Pep Guardiola.
After episode 1 , when the two managed Real and Barcelona, they have now moved to the Premier League, to fight for all honors as neighbours in the same city.
The two teams are, without a doubt, the most active ones on the transfer scene this summer, although both their campaigns are far from ending. United are linked heavily with the record-breaking return of Paul Pogba, while City are trying to persuade some great forwards, like Griezmann or Leroy Sane, to join their ranks.
So far, United’s transfers (Ibrahimovic, Bailly, and Mkhitaryan) seem to out-weight those of City (Gundogan, Nolito and Jovetic’s return), but City have had better results and an overall better team in recent years.
The two squads have various ways in which they approach the new season – but can we really be certain of anything, when the teams are led by the two best coaches in the world?
That is the exact reason why the first clash between the two is very hard to predict. Guardiola most probably did not have enough time to implement his style into this new team, so we won’t see the usual tiki-taka his squads play.
On the other hand, Mourinho is known to play direct, pragmatic football – which might lead United to have the upper hand in the game. Even though it is a friendly, the sheer competitiveness of the game will produce a few yellow cards – try to take advantage of this.
And one last thing: if you are able to bet on possession, bet on City – tiki-taka might still take a while to implement, but United aren’t a team that likes keeping the ball at the moment. And Mourinho is not the coach to change that.
All in all, prepare for the first episode of the best rivalry between football coaches in the world. Pair that rivalry with the one between the teams, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed to see more than 2 Manchester Derbies this season. Who knows what the cups will bring us?
