Italy – Spain is a classic of European football. The two teams have played a great number of games against each other – in group stages of final tournaments, in latter stages all the way to finals, in qualification groups, friendlies, you name it.
This clash has a lot of history in it, and both sides want revenge for recent results. It’s more than a simple qualification game – but who will come on top of it?
Italy vs Spain – 6th October
Betting Odds: Italy 3.20 or 11/5 Draw 2.90 or 19/10 Spain 2.70 or 17/10
Spain comes after an 8-0 demolition of Liechtenstein, with 7 goals coming in the second half. They want revenge after the Italians eliminated them at Euro 2016, even if victory on Italian grounds wasn’t very easy to achieve in the past.
Thankfully for them, the squad seems to be in good form, and although they lack players like Xavi or Iniesta, they seem to be more than able to pose a clear threat. Morata will be the main attacking outlet for the Iberian side.
On the other hand, Italy started this campaign with a 3-1 away win over Israel. Although the team seems weaker on paper than we normally know, they come after a very strong Euro 2016 campaign and want to avoid defeat against Spain in order to be favorites for first place in the group.
A win would send them clear on 1st place and favorite for direct qualification – avoiding the dreaded playoff where a single mistake can send you home. The 0-4 defeat in the Euro 2012 final against Spain is still present in everyone’s mind.
Italy vs Spain Betting Tips
From a betting perspective, we’re looking at a pretty disciplined and tactical game. Spain is no longer a team which can score against any opposition, and talking about the Italian art of defense is a well-known cliché.
Under 2,5 goals is the clearest idea, and 1X has surprisingly high odds – we do believe that the Spanish will also be content with a draw. Also, if you can bet on possession, Spain is the clear candidate.
Draw & Under 2.5: 3.25 or 9/4
